About WilderNZ

WilderNZ exists because New Zealand’s outdoor spaces deserve better than generic travel guides and gear lists that have never seen a Fiordland sandfly or a Tongariro southerly. We write for people who actually want to go, not just dream about it.

What WilderNZ is

WilderNZ is a New Zealand travel and outdoor gear website based in Auckland. We publish destination guides, gear reviews, and trip planning content for two audiences: international visitors planning a NZ adventure, and Kiwis who already live here and want to get out more.

Everything on WilderNZ is written in the Wild Kiwi voice — direct, honest, and occasionally dry. We tell you what the track is actually like, not what the tourism brochure says it is like. We tell you which gear is worth buying and which is overpriced. We tell you when the weather is going to make your plan a bad one.

What we cover

WilderNZ covers three things and does not try to cover everything:

• Destination guides — deep dives into NZ’s Great Walks and day tracks. Not surface-level overviews — actual logistics, gear requirements, what to expect, and what nobody tells you until you’re already there
• Gear guides — honest reviews of the gear that actually works in NZ conditions. We don’t recommend gear we wouldn’t use ourselves
• Trip planning — tools, guides, and practical information for planning a NZ outdoor trip from scratch, whether you’re coming from overseas or planning a weekend escape from Auckland
